How to use Twitter for business

If you aren’t using Twitter for business, you’re missing out.  Twitter, in my opinion, is the second hottest traffic resource on the Internet, next only to Google.  Therefore, I believe that everyone should be utilizing it, especially people who are doing business online.  The more targeted traffic you can generate, the better.

Just about everyone is on Twitter these days.  Everyone is on Twitter because people follow people.  When people follow people that means they are watching.  They are watching for a reason.  It only makes sense, then, to develop a presence on Twitter for business purposes so you can take advantage of the exposure.

To generate targeted traffic using Twitter for business then it’s necessary to understand the basics…

  • Most people believe that you need thousands of followers to generate traffic with Twitter.  While having thousands of the RIGHT followers is HUGE, it’s not 100% necessary if you are using the right #hashtags.
  • The best way to get quality traffic from Twitter IS NOT advertising.  If you have the coin to buy the sponsored ads, great.  If not, stick with sharing quality content with your target audience.  The traffic will come and your brand, reputation and bank account will reflect the benefits of doing things the right way.
  • The best place to drive traffic from Twitter is to your blog.  A blog loaded with great content will convert your Twitter followers to blog subscribers.  Blog subscribers will become clients, customers, members, etc. so long as your content is helping them answer questions and solve problems.

It’s also necessary to understand which tools can assist you in taking full advantage of Twitter for business…

  • SocialOomph – There are a couple of different schools of thought concerning Twitter automation.  Some are for it, some are against it.  SocialOomph is a resource that gives you the ability to automate Twitter, Facebook and other status updates.  Used responsibly, this can turn your social media resources into a 24 hours traffic generating machine.
  • Indexes – There are several indexes where listing your Twitter presence is vital.  Places like Twellow, are a great way for you to expand your presence and build your brand.

Twitter tricks, tools and cheats – One of the most common questions I get concerning Twitter traffic is based around applications that somehow trick or cheat the system.  Most of these revolve around the idea that you need to build followers fast.  This is not the case.  You are better off building a targeted follower base by following key influences in your target market and/or just allowing your content to do build your follower base.

Remember, everything you are doing online is about connecting with one person at a time.  All you need is one right connection to create an explosion.  Keep it real, give great value and work on those personal connections and you’ll see a huge difference in a short period of time.

Great article Rex. I was surprised when I recently checked my stats and found that Facebook traffic was still beating Twitter. Google was 1st, Facebook 2nd, Twitter 3rd and then blog commenting, blogging communities and blogging networks were 4th. Was really surprised about that since I’ve been much more active on Twitter than Facebook probably for the past month now. Finally figured this Twitter thing out so am enjoying it a lot more.

Thanks for these tips and I probably still have a long way to go yet! Always enjoy hearing other people’s perspectives on this subject. If there is a better way to do things, I definitely want to know about it! Glad I stopped by.

    Have a great weekend!

    Adrienne
